Almost a month ago, 17 year old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed as he walked home from grabbing a snack from the neighborhood store. Based on recent evidence, mainly phone recordings, self appointed neighborhood watch dog George Zimmerman, preyed on the youngster because Zimmerman thought he looked suspicious. As this story came to light for the whole country to see more than a week ago, outrage has grown over the handling of the killing. Zimmerman claimed self defense, but his story is slowly falling apart as more and more people come forward and more recordings are released. Zimmerman was almost twice the weight of Trayvon Martin and based on evidence, he initiated contact with the teenager who apparently felt uncomfortable when he realized George Zimmerman was staring at him. Zimmerman according to reports started to pursue the youngster then a struggle ensued. On released recordings Trayvon, whose voice was identified by his father, can be heard screaming for help in the background which ended suddenly after a gun shot. What we heard were the death tapes of Trayvon Martin. When cops came on the scene, Zimmerman was brought in and questioned then released after Sanford Florida police agreed that he was acting in self defense. The only person who got a background check was Trayvon Martin who came up clean. Zimmerman has since been in hiding as the outrage grows louder and FEDS get involved. Though justice is definitely due, no one should be shocked if Zimmerman who has a jail record, gets a slap on the wrist thanks to Florida's loose "Stand your ground" law which basically means, if you feel someone is a threat to your person, and you have your licensed gun, you can shoot to kill. Laws like these always comes back to haunt a state. No one really knows why Zimmerman pursued and killed an unarmed 17 year old teenage boy. Based on what we've all heard one will point to race which is hard to deny. If George Zimmerman and his attorney's whoever they may be, try to defend his actions from behind the "Stand Your Ground" law, here at 5 reasons that strategy won't work according former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm who posted a piece on this troubling issue on Huffingtonpost.com.
- The call from Zimmerman to law enforcement, and the officers telling Martin not to pursue. Zimmerman whispers what many have described as a racial slur under his breath.
- There is a 911 call where you can hear a voice yelling for help and a firearm shot.
- Trayvon's father identified his voice on that 911 call on Al Sharpton's Politics Nation program on MSNBC.
- The account of the girlfriend, who says Trayvon told her by cellphone that he was being followed.
- Trayvon was not armed and weighed between 75-100 pounds less than Zimmerman.
