Russell Simmons is always throwing money at something. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. But that is the nature of business. Its all a gamble and Russell isn't afraid to gamble. These days his time is spent overseeing his super hot website GlobalGrind.com among other business ventures that still allow him to keep maintainance on his Hamptons Long Island spread, Ex Wife Kimora Lee Simmons and his two daughters. Russell is about to gamble again and this time he is going big or going home. Part of his gamble included moving from New York to L.A. so he can be closer to the industry he's attempting to make a bigger mark in. He has a "first look" deal with HBO where he's already shot a slew of pilots which include "12 Years a Slave" as a TV drama and "Cain and Abel," written by Omar Epps and former Onyx rapper Sticky Fingaz. No new plans from Russell Simmons would be complete if it didn't have something in there for and about Hip Hop.
Simmons also has plans to bring hip-hop to Broadway, working with his
business partner Jake Stein. "What 'Rock of Ages' did with rock, we're
planning on doing with hip-hop," says Stein, president of Def Pictures.
The goal: a musical that tours the country, premiering at various
"iconic hip-hop venues" in major U.S. cities. Stein imagines the musical
following the path of Run-D.M.C.'s Raising Hell tour of 1986.
