MTV Networks Exec Van Toffler during a keynote address expressed MTV's love for social networks and how they love to use the hell out of them to reach viewers. But said MTV has no interest in buying a social network site because why buy one when you can utilize as many as you want for free. Toffler also made it clear that MTV is not a technology company, it is a content company. Toffler was asked what would Myspace look like today if Viacom was successful in acquiring it back in 2005. He said It would have been much more integrated into the content that MTV creates. Of course Mr. Toffler, naturally!
-MTV has shifted the tone of its programming to be less cynical and snarky and more inspirational and aspirational, Toffler said. Why? Because that's what the network's millennial viewers want. Millennial viewers are less rebellious than their Gen-X forebears, he said, marveling that "they actually watch 'Jersey Shore' with their moms and dads."
