Musician Wyclef Jean like the rest of the world wishes that his homeland Haiti wasn't hit by an earthquake. But something tells us he is now wishing a little harder. Since the disaster, Wyclef has been encouraging people to donate to his Yele Haiti organization. But that hit a road bump late last week when it was revealed that he may have been using the charity as his personal piggy bank. The musician in a teary press conference this week, admitted that there were mistakes made, but he in no way profited from the organization. Now people who've worked with Jean's charity are coming out the wood work to our friends at
Gawker saying Yele is just a celebrity vanity project that lacks the ability to deliver help to Haiti. One former worker sums up the organization saying:
"Yele is a joke among NGOs in Haiti," said a freelance videographer who worked one year for the organization in Port-au-Prince and declined to be named. "It would be like if you gave me and my friends several million dollars and said, 'OK, go help Haiti."
There is also a new accusation that Jean personally profited from a picture of Angelina that Yele sold for $600,000 to People magazine in 2006. Jean is said to have paid himself a $60,000 finders fee. Yele Haiti is said to have bought good press coverage in Haiti back in 2006 for $250,000
