We love writing about interesting recording artists and featuring their music. We believe that the music industry right now is a redundant cesspool of mediocre artists, especially in the hip hip market. It is not rare to come across fresh talent, but when you do, you have to pay attention. Because maybe, just maybe you are witnessing history in the making. Take for example The Outfit, members Face Gartrel and Cash Kato seem to be resurrecting that classic hip hip sound with their catchy remake of the RUN-DMC joint 'My Adidas'. The duo have been making music together now for a decade and they are showing no signs of slowing down. Both men honed and built their sound and image in Brooklyn, a cultural hot bed of New York City that never sleeps. Get to know Kato and Gartrel as they share with us how they create as a group and how their backgrounds come front and center in their music. On Making it Work:
Although they each posses the talent to have successful solo careers, their musical chemistry is undeniable. Combining rugged good looks, an eclectic taste in music, venomous lyricism, and a pop sensibility, is their winning formula. Another winning formula is that they don't cater to one particular audience with their music. Says Kato:“We just make good music, and good music transcends age, race, and social background”
On Their Background:
Their unique approach to music is directly linked to their unique backgrounds. Both haling from Flatbush, Brooklyn, an area saturated in West Indian culture, they have learned to incorporate a verity of musical styles into their music. Face was born in England and moved to Brooklyn when he was six years old. Kato was born and raised in the Washington D.C./Northern VA area and moved to Brooklyn when he was 16 years old. They each bring their own cultural perspectives, but they have a similar Swag only found in Brooklyn.
On Their Forthcoming Self Titled CD:
The song topics range from jilted love and hard times on “Faded” to dreams of wealth on “Rich” to the light hearted nostalgia of “Remember That”. On the heavily reggae influenced song “Signal” which features Face doing reggae chat, they seamlessly combined Hip Hop and reggae to create a club anthem that will bang in cities from Kingston to LA. The albums first single “My Adidas” is a remake of the 1986 RunDMC classic. It has received a tremendous response on both the internet and underground radio.
On Their Group Name:
“The OutFit” is not referring to clothing. It is a reference to Al Capone’s 1920’s crew The Outfit. Among other reasons, Face and Kato chose the name The OutFit because of the kinship they feel with the Brooklyn native Al Capone. Coming from the bottom and achieving your goals, whether right or wrong.
These two MCs are a much needed dose of versatility to the hip hop game. I listened to,and watched the video for 'My Adidas' probably ten times. I also searched them out online and checked out other music and videos this creative duo has done over the years. My conclusion? They are on track to greatness and getting the respect they deserve. We are looking forward to their CD and we will be keeping a close watch on The Outfit as they travel the road to stardom.
