››BY THE AFFLUENCER EDITORS
According to a Pew Research Center report, there are fewer blacks on the internet than whites. White internet users lead with a slim 7 points (Whites-87 percent Vs. Blacks-80 percent. When it comes to Twitter, the percentage points flip with more blacks (22 percent) using the social network than whites (16 percent). In fact, "Black Twitter" as it is called, has become a corner within the social media giant where blacks hangout via creative hashtags to discuss issues that directly affect their communities as well as pop culture topics like TV, and celebrities. "Black Twitter" is also where sensitive discussions take place on recent events like the George Zimmerman and Michael Dunn verdicts. "Black Twitter" has taken on a life of its own, and continues to expand, and the social media world is taking notice.
"It's kind of like the black table in the
lunchroom, sort of, where people with like interests and experiences,
and ways of talking and communication, lump together and talk among
themselves," said Tracy Clayton, a blogger and editor at Buzzfeed known
on Twitter as (at)brokeymcpoverty.
