According to a report published at thesmokinggun.com, civil rights leader, socialite and cable news host Reverend Al Sharpton was a reliable and accurate FBI informant whose numerous tips and recordings helped to bring down major mob figures within the Genovese crime family. The Rev was also known to inform on major music and sports figures. This report is now opening up questions on whether or not the Rev may still be on the FBI's payroll. Since this report went public the Reverend has denied it all saying that he was never caught in any drug sting and forced to turn informant. He also said he only contacted the FBI after receiving numerous threats from the mob due to his activism. Said the Rev:
“I was never told I was an informant or I had a number or none of that. Whether or not they used some of the other
information they got during that period for other purposes, I don’t
know.”
He was so good at “playing dumb’’ that he wound up helping to bring down
such names as Venero “Benny Eggs’’ Mangano, Dominick “Baldy Dom’’
Canterino and even the muttering “oddfather” of Greenwich Village,
family boss Vincent “Chin’’ Gigante, the site said. He was a “very reliable informant, and his information ‘has never
been found to be false or inaccurate,’ ” the report said, quoting a 1986
court document. While it was known that Sharpton had spied for the FBI on music- and
sports-promotion figures, the new data said he also extracted juicy
information from wiseguys.
