The Metrocard To Meet The Same Fate as The Token

In keeping with the times, The MTA has begun its slow phase out of the Metro Card. The agency says it wants to totally replace the floppy cards with a new way to pay by either waving your credit card over a scanner or a mobile app similar to that of the Starbucks payment app. The MTA says it hopes to completely phase out the metro card by 2016 in favor of one or both of the payment methods but consultants brought in to manage the transition say that the 2016 deadline is not realistic. By their estimates, the new payment methods will be up and running fully by 2020. With such a major change in how commuters pay to board public transportation, some are understandably nervous and concerned about security.
