Artist Xaviera Simmons Listens to Neil Young, D'Angelo, and Buddhist Podcasts to Get Herself in a Creative Mood
From Artinfo:
"When working in my studio, I'm conflicted about music," says Xaviera Simmons, who uses photography, among other mediums, to construct fascinating and open-ended historical and personal narratives. "I have had a DJ practice for six or so years, and at least 4,000 vinyl records," the artist explains. "My ears are really sensitive to sound and to what moods I'm filling my body with when I listen to and work with sounds. I have always loved music yet it's a complex relationship, as the majority of my closest friends are music-makers, some extremely successful and others just beginning or in the middle of their path. It's not an innocent experience anymore. I love listening to my friend's songs the most because they are current and often personal. But what if I'm in a disagreement or in a total love vibe with my favorite songwriter who happens to be my personal friend — then what? I try and keep the channels clear with these special folks."
