Rappers are still launching record labels/imprints in an effort to bring on talented members of their crews as well as others they may come across. J Cole is the latest to join the label owning club in a deal he struck with Interscrope Records. Dreamville Records was announced during a show on January 28th and it is a dream come true for the MC who seems intent on following closely in the foot steps of his mentor Jay Z.
“We’ve been dreaming about a label situation for years,” Cole told Billboard over the phone a few days after the announcement. “The deal’s been official since late December, and we’d been working on it for a while before that, but it felt too important to just go out and yell it right when it happened. It needed a more grand announcement.”
