Playd Spotlight: Will Steph Jones Ever be The Star he Could be?
Heard of Steph Jones? Maybe you did, maybe you didn't, but one things for sure, this kid has it. He just needs the right launching pad. Lets refresh your memory. He was the face of Enyce and signed to Ford Models. After the modeling thing, he was signed to Ludacris's DTP label but later left after some creative differences (translation: DTP didn't know what to do with him). Since leaving the Ludacris camp, Jones has been mostly blazing his own music trail. He has built up quite a following on the internet via social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, very smart move. He is a savvy hustler and self brand builder who sells Steph Jones merchandise directly to his fans. The ladies swoon whenever he posts a shirtless picture on Twitter, and he has been in the studio non-stop, recording music which lead to the release of "Gravity", a mix-tape released late last year. The first video off the mix-tape titled "Little Drummer Boy" was recently released and received well by his fans. He is a character as well. His video clips on Youtube are entertaining and sometimes hi-lites some acting skills.Clearly Steph is making serious moves but doesn't seem to get the same love and attention people like Drake got from the mainstream for doing basically the same thing, granted they make different music? Why aren't labels competing for his talent? Is he not making the music he looks like he should be making? The model turned singer is sometimes criticized for not making "Black Music" but he doesn't seem interested in being put in a box. He describes his music as Real good feel good music and doesn't feed into negativity from the "haters". With his unique look and sound topped off with his relentless hustle, something tells us, this year, will be a big year for Mr. Jones because the hard work is already paying off. We're keeping our eyes on this one.
