Dr. Dre Introduced as Apple's Newest Employee Via Phone During The Company's Worldwide Developers Conference

The Apple/Beats deal is done and both Dr. Dre and Beats partner/former Interscope Records Chairman Jimmy Iovine are no longer their own bosses. The $3 billion dollars apple paid for Beats brings both Dre and Jimmy Iovine on as new employees working under Itunes Cheif Eddy Cue. This morning during a presentation at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference, Dre whose net worth will balloon to about $1.2 billion because of the buyout, was introduced during a conference call by Apple's senior vice president of software engineering Craig Federighi.

“What time should I show up for work?” asked the hip-hop producer/entrepreneur, joking that he wanted to arrive at the company’s campus in the morning before early-arriving CEO Tim Cook.
“New employee orientation starts at 9:00, and you don’t want to miss the free t-shirt,” Federighi told Dre in a tongue-in-cheek conversation. The company did not announce a job title for Dre.

Apple Confirms it is Buying Beats For $200 Million Less Than First Reported. Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine Joining Apple Team

All the speculations and hearsay was put to rest today when Apple Inc finally confirmed that it is in fact buying newbie electronics company Beats Electronics, commonly known as Beats By Dre. However the $3.2 billion price tag that was mentioned in the thousands of stories about the rumored deal was over by $200 million. Apple will pay $3 billion for the company. With $160 billion in cash on hand, $3 billion won't even register on apple's spreadsheets. With Jimmy Iovine joining Apple, this means he will resign his post as Chairman/CEO of Interscope Records, opening up the top spot to the label's number two, John Janick who has been running the company day to day anyway.

Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre will join Apple as part of the deal, which will likely close by September, Apple said. The acquisition takes the form of a $2.6 billion in cash and around $400 million in stock. When the deal was first announced, Dr. Dre called himself "the first billionaire in hip hop." Whether or not that's true, he will definitely make a lot of money from the deal.

An Apple Beats Deal Means a New CEO For Interscope Records

The tech industry and Wall Street are buzzing about Apple Inc's plans to spend $3.2 billion to acquire 3 year old Beats Electronics potentially making Dr. Dre Hip Hop's first billionaire and bringing on Beats CEO Jimmy Iovine. Iovine who is is mostly known for his roll as CEO of Interscope Records where he groomed artists like 50 cent, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Lady Gaga and others will step down from his roll at the label as he is expected to take on a creative roll at Apple. With Jimmy Iovine gone from Interscope that leaves one man in charge of one of the biggest record labels on the planet and his name is John Janick. 36 yr old Janick joined the company as President/COO back in 2012 after major success running his own label Fueled by Ramen and serving as co-president of Elektra Records. Janick's expected elevation to CEO of Interscope would be the fastest rise to the top of a major label ever and would put him in command of a vast artist roster that has produced nothing but hits over the past decade.

Janick, who relocated to California to work as Iovine’s top lieutenant, said at the time of his hiring that, “I’ve been entrusted to help build this company for the future. It’s fantastic to be joining a company that has been built on such exciting artists and music; that’s something I intend on continuing.”
Now, it appears as though he will officially get his chance — and his label, not to mention the music industry writ large, will finally have in Iovine an ally inside Apple, whose music operations it appears as if he will soon be running.

Is Apple About to Buy Beats Electronics (Beats by Dre) For $3.2 Billion?

The tech industry is confused and buzzing about a possible acquisition of Beats Electronics by Apple Inc for $3.2 billion. The confusion settles around the question of why would Apple buy Beats. Is their something more to Beats Electronics that Apple wants/needs?  If a deal does happen, will this make beats co-founder Andre "Dr. Dre" Young the first hip hop billionaire?

The purchase of Beats, which also runs a streaming music service, would be Apple's largest ever acquisition, the newspaper reported. It said the deal could be announced as early as next week.  Apple-watchers have speculated that the company that upended the music industry - and today is the single largest seller of tunes - was contemplating a Spotify-like on-demand music service to go with its recently launched iRadio service and iTunes store.

Twitter's Vine Introduces Direct Video Messaging

When Instagram introduced its video service, many of its users who were also users of Twitter's Vine, predicted the death of Vine, even mocking it with funny memes. Well, Vine didn't die and it is actually about to get even better as it introduces direct video messaging.

There is a direct parallel to be drawn here between Instagram’s Direct image messaging feature, obviously — and it goes hand in hand with Twitter’s renewed interest in its direct messaging channel. The allegory is interesting, as there isn’t a lot of public evidence that Direct has had any real traction. Still, it allows Twitter to experiment with video messaging in a separate silo, and it does make some sense to start with Vine before adding video messaging to Twitter. You create a new Vine message by tapping on the Messages section, recording a video and sending it off. You can send to multiple recipients, but all of the conversations are one-to-one — much like competing messaging app Snapchat. If you send to multiple people, you’ll get separate threads for each one.

Can This Man Survive on a $1 a Year Salary?

Facebook CEO/Founder Mark Zuckerberg is taking one for the underpaid. The social media network boss is taking a huge cut in salary. in 2012 Zuckerberg made $503,205. In 2013 that salary fell by $503,204 to $1. But don't worry about Mark. With a net worth of $27 billion, making him the 22nd richest person in the world, he will survive.

Zuckerberg is following the well worn path of other Silicon Valley technology moguls who also chose to take on the symbolic annual salary of $1 after they were already wealthy. Apple Inc.’s late co-founder Steve Jobs helped popularize the practice, which is today also espoused by Google Inc. co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, among others. All own sizable equity stakes in their own companies.

iPhone 6 Will Carry a Bigger 5.5 inch Liquid Crystal Display

Apple Inc will introduce a new iPhone expected to be called the iPhone 6 in September. The new iPhone will carry a bigger liquid display screen coming in at 5.5 inches directly competing with bigger screen smart phones like the Motorola razr and Samsung Galaxy.

Mass production of liquid crystal display panels will start as early as the April-June quarter at Sharp's Kameyama factory, Japan Display's Mobara plant, and elsewhere, according to sources. LG Electronics will supply panels as well. The new handset's display resolution is expected to be significantly higher than that of current models. Apple put the iPhone 5 on the market in September 2012, selling 5 million units within the first three days. But shipments have since been lackluster. Last year, it introduced models in the same series with different price points for the first time with the 5S and 5C.
